He was named after composer Jerome Kern.
A childhood accident resulted in amputation of most of his right
middle finger.
While in elementary school he learned to play five-string banjo.
His first love was drawing and painting – gave it up at age 19 to
devote himself to guitar.
From 1962-1964 he performed mostly bluegrass and old-time folk
music with Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers and Mother
McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions.
In 1965 he became lead guitarist and vocalist for a rock group
destined to become world-famous.
From 1973 – 1974 he performed on banjo and recorded bluegrass
with the band Old and In The Way in collaboration with
bluegrass artists David Grisman (mandolin), Peter Rowan
(guitar), Vassar Clements (fiddle) and others.
Revived interest in graphic arts and design, produced illustrations,
lithographs, watercolors and a line of men’s neckties.
He died in 1995. According to his wishes half of his ashes were
spread in the Ganges River in India and half in San
Francisco Bay.
