He was named after composer Jerome Kern.
A childhood accident resulted in amputation of most of his right
middle finger.
While in elementary school he learned to play five-string banjo.
His first love was drawing and painting – gave it up at age 19 to
devote himself to guitar.
From 1962-1964 he performed mostly bluegrass and old-time folk
music with Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers and Mother
McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions.
In 1965 he became lead guitarist and vocalist for a rock group
destined to become world-famous.
From 1973 – 1974 he performed on banjo and recorded bluegrass
with the band Old and In The Way in collaboration with
bluegrass artists David Grisman (mandolin), Peter Rowan
(guitar), Vassar Clements (fiddle) and others.
Revived interest in graphic arts and design, produced illustrations,
lithographs, watercolors and a line of men’s neckties.
He died in 1995. According to his wishes half of his ashes were
spread in the Ganges River in India and half in San
Francisco Bay.

A écouter et à voir avec le Gratetful Dead !!! pour les plus jeunes qui n'ont pas connu ça........ 8) mais aussi en allant sur le site du Dawg qui a beaucoup joué avec lui......comme en témoingent bien des enregistrements et autres vidéos.....

Jerry Garcia, my guitar hero.
Quand on m'a fait écouter Old & In the Way à l'université, on m'a demandé si je connaissais. J'ai dit non, mais on dirait Jerry Garcia au banjo, tant son style est reconnaissable.
Un peu comme Vassar Clements qui, selon la légende, a vu une affiche de Grateful Dead lors d'une sortie avec Old & In the Way et dit à Garcia, en rigolant, "Ah regarde Jerry, on dirait que c'est toi!".

En effet, les disques avec Grisman valent le détour. Tout comme le dvd, Grateful Dawg.
